I've been always buying the cheapo $15-25 pairs but they never lasted. Either because I'm abusive to them or because they are crap. Most likely a combination of both.
A few weeks back, I was passing through Gagnon's sports over in Oshawa and noticed a brand called Numa in their sunglasses section. They looked pretty good and were big enough for my big head but I couldn't pull the trigger since I didn't know much about the company. After doing a tad of research online, most people liked them. They are supposed to be super durable and be able to withstand some tough conditions/treatment.
So I went back over to Gagnon's a week later and picked up a pair of Numa Chuck with the copper polarized lens.
So far so good.
What do we mean by “unbreakable eyewear”?
Numa warrants that under normal wear and tear, the frames will not break. (See our Limited Lifetime Warranty for full details.)
What is “normal wear and tear”?
“Normal wear and tear” includes but is not limited to: scaling a cliff face, downhill mountain biking or skiing, parachuting, hiking rugged terrain, dropping your Numas on a hard surface, accidentally stepping or sitting on them, and even letting your toddler play with them.
I have been taking slightly better care of these sunglasses since they did cost me $100, instead of just $20, but they haven't had any issues yet. I did try to flex the frame to see if that would crack it but it passed that test.
This is copied and pasted from Numa's website,
Tough-Flex(TM) Frame Material
When JB was searching for the frame material that would make his eyewear as tough as the rest of his gear, he discovered Tough-Flex, an extremely lightweight and flexible Swiss memory fiber originally engineered for use in molding ski-boot buckles. With that history, it is no surprise that Numa's Tough-Flex frames can withstand extremes of temperatures, from arctic cold to desert heat without degradation. It is stiff like plastic when at rest, but flexes under pressure, torque or flexion, and so will not break under impact or other conditions of duress. Whether they are crushed in your pack or dropped from a height, your Tough-Flex frames will be there when you need them. The advanced characteristics of this material, together with our dedication to the highest level of design and quality standards, place Numa at the cutting-edge.In the box it comes with a cleaning cloth bag and a hard case for the sunglasses.
Here are a few shots of the glasses and pictures taken through the lens of the glasses.
And they help me catch more of these....
